What 30 Years of Somatic & Energy Work Taught Me About True Healing

A client sits on a comfortable sofa with her eyes closed and a hand on her chest, connecting with her body while an experienced somatic practitioner offers calm, supportive presence in a warm, brightly lit room.

After more than three decades of helping people navigate anxiety, emotional overwhelm, and major life transitions, I’ve worked with almost every technique, modality, and framework available. From EFT Tapping and Energy Psychology to somatic bodywork and emotional literacy, these tools have transformed countless lives.

Yet, after 30 years in this work, the single most important lesson I’ve learned isn't about a technique at all.

It’s this: Meaningful change rarely begins with a fix. It begins with meeting yourself differently.

Here is what three decades of somatic and energy work have taught me about what actually creates lasting emotional freedom:

In This Post You’ll Learn

  • Why meaningful emotional healing begins with meeting yourself differently rather than trying to "fix" yourself.

  • How to shift your internal environment from pressure and criticism to curiosity, presence, and compassion.

  • The way your body signals emotional wisdom long before your mind can analyze or articulate it.

  • Why safe human connection and attunement are far more vital than any specific technique or modality.

  • How somatic and energy work help you settle an overworked nervous system and build lasting self-trust.

1. Your Nervous System Cannot Heal Under Pressure

Early in my career, I noticed a common pattern: people would come to healing work treats themselves like broken machinery. They wanted the quickest protocol, the fastest technique, or the exact steps to "eliminate" their discomfort.

But a dysregulated nervous system cannot feel safe when it is being pressured, judged, or forced to perform. True somatic healing requires shifting the environment you create within yourself:

  • Curiosity over Criticism: Swapping "Why am I feeling this way again?" for "What is my body trying to protect me from right now?"

  • Presence over Pressure: Giving your nervous system room to settle rather than forcing a rapid emotional turnaround.

  • Compassion over Performance: Recognizing that "doing healing right" is just another form of perfectionism that keeps you stuck in high alert.

2. The Body Knows Long Before the Mind Has Words

We often try to think, analyze, and talk our way out of emotional distress. But our minds are often the last to truly understand what’s happening.

Somatic work teaches us that the body holds the wisdom first. Tension in your shoulders, an unexplained tightness in your chest, or sudden resistance to a new path aren't flaws—they are messages. When we stop treating physical and emotional symptoms as problems to be solved and start listening to them as signals, the root cause of our struggles naturally begins to untangle.

3. Technique Is Secondary—Connection Is Primary

Tools like EFT Tapping, somatic tracking, and energy psychology are extraordinarily effective. But a technique applied without safe human connection and attunement is just an exercise.

There is an old Greek word I have come to love: Pompos—a guide who doesn’t simply point out the road from a safe distance, but steps onto the path to accompany you along it. Real transformation happens when you feel seen, supported, and accompanied by someone who isn't frightened by the territory you’re traversing.

That is why I don't begin with a technique. I begin with you. Your history, your nervous system, your boundaries, and what you are ready for—and what you aren't—set the pace.

4. The Goal Isn't Dependence—It's Self-Trust

True healing doesn't mean relying indefinitely on a practitioner, a daily checklist, or a specific method. The ultimate goal of somatic and energy work is to help you:

  • Settle your overworked nervous system when life feels overwhelming.

  • Understand the language of your own body and emotions.

  • Reclaim your confidence to navigate difficult transitions on your own.

You might call this process teaching, mentoring, or energy work. After 30 years, I simply think of it as walking with.

You Don’t Have to Find Your Way Alone

If you’ve been trying to force your way through emotional blocks, burnout, or transition, take a deep breath. You don't need more pressure, and you don't have to figure it all out by yourself.

Whether you need to settle an exhausted nervous system, untangle an old emotional pattern, or simply have an experienced companion beside you on the path, the journey starts with one gentle step.
